When you might see a medical oncologist

Many prostate cancers are treated by a urologist or radiation oncologist. You may be referred to a medical oncologist if the cancer:

  • is high risk, and hormone therapy is being added to radiotherapy
  • has come back after surgery or radiotherapy
  • has spread beyond the prostate
  • keeps growing despite hormone therapy

Treatments

Treatment depends on the stage of the cancer, your health and what matters to you. It may include:

  • Hormone therapy, which lowers or blocks testosterone
  • Chemotherapy
  • Targeted therapy, for cancers with certain gene changes
  • PSMA therapy, a targeted radioactive treatment given with nuclear medicine specialists

Genetic tests on the cancer, and sometimes on your own genes, can open up more treatment options and may matter for your family.

Living well on treatment

Hormone therapy can affect energy, mood, bone strength, heart health and weight. Regular checks and exercise are part of your care, together with your GP.
