A first appointment with a medical oncologist can be a lot to take in. Here is what to bring, what to expect and how fees work.
You will need a current referral from your GP or another specialist to claim a Medicare rebate. Referrals from a GP are usually valid for 12 months, and referrals from another specialist for 3 months.
The rooms will confirm your appointment time and location. If you need an interpreter, please let the rooms know when you book.
Dr Hurwitz will talk with you about your health and how you are feeling, examine you, and go through your test results. He will explain the diagnosis and the treatment options, including their likely benefits and side effects, so you can make decisions that suit you.
Further tests may be arranged, such as scans, blood tests or molecular testing of the cancer. If a clinical trial may be suitable, he will explain what it involves, and the choice is always yours (about clinical trials). Many cases are also discussed at a multidisciplinary team meeting, and your GP is kept informed of the plan.
For the fee schedule, please contact the rooms. Bulk billing may be available depending on individual circumstances. Treatment in a private hospital requires private health insurance with hospital cover.
Video consultations can be arranged for patients outside metropolitan Melbourne. Mention this when you book. You will need a phone, tablet or computer with a camera and a reliable internet connection.
Allow a little extra time to park and find the rooms. Maps and directions are on the contact page.
